We Love Letterpress

In a world that has become digital, instantaneous and one dimensional, Letterpress offers a tangible alternative that takes time to create, a difference you can touch and feel. Invented in 1440, letterpress printing was the most popular form of printing until offset printing was introduced in the 1950’s. Before both the personal computer and the dot matrix printer, the only way to print at home was a tabletop letterpress, just like the one Buddha Bear Press still uses today. Even with endless software updates a desktop printer is admittedly much easier to master, however it is unable to replicate the exceptional look and feel of a letterpress print. We love letterpress because each print created is original, a unique piece of art.

Hand Crafted

It all starts with pen and paper, a hand drawn design. The images are then scanned, processed and turned into a polymer plate, a replacement for the moveable type of yesteryear. After the plate is applied to the press, each piece of paper is hand loaded and pressed individually, once for each colour. Once our cards have been pressed three times they are folded and packaged manually. The process is truly a hand craft, a labour of love.

Eco - Friendly

Buddha Bear Press uses Crane’s Lettra for our house stock. This luxurious, soft to the touch paper is made with cotton fibers reclaimed from the garment industry and residual fibers from processed cotton seed. Our brown bag envelopes are made of 100% recycled content and we use bio-degradable, plant-based packaging. Our goal is to leave as little of a carbon footprint as we can.
